K-pop stars who openly identify with queer labels are hard to find. Due to the conservative nature of South Korean society, coming out can be a big challenge.
However, some music artists have openly revealed their true identities and are now serving as role models for other queer people closed in and out of the industry. This list will talk about some past and current K-pop stars who identify with the LGBTQ + community.
Which K-pop stars are from the LGBTQ + community?
Holland, real name Go Taeseob, is a gay soloist in the Korean music industry. He debuted on January 21, 2018, with his single Imaginary country.
Holland’s name was taken from the country of Holland because they were the first country to legalize same-sex marriage. The singer revealed that no entertainment label would sign with him due to his openness to his own sexuality, so he had to fund his own debut by working several part-time jobs.
MRSHLL or Marshall Bang is a Korean-American singer. He made his debut in the music industry in 2015 and is considered the first openly gay South Korean singer.
The K-pop star was last known on Feel Ghood Music, Tiger JK’s label that is home to famous R&B artist BIBI. MRSHLL has worked with Tiger JK, Woo Wonjae, Ugly Duck, and other similar artists in the past.
3) Jo Kwon
Jo Kwon is a member of K-pop group 2AM. In an interview, Jo Kwon revealed that he adopted a genderless way of speaking, saying:
“Being asexual is my weapon.”
It is not known whether Jo Kwon has a set of preferred pronouns or not. Regardless, the singer has been praised for his courage in freely expressing his thoughts on gender identity.
4) Som Hye (Som Hein)
Som Hye was a contestant on the survival-reality show Mnet K-pop School of idols in 2017. In 2019, she revealed on her Instagram account that she was bisexual and in a relationship with a girl at the time.
However, in 2020, she revealed that she and her girlfriend broke up after a year. She thanked her fans for their support and for all the positivity she received.
5) Minsung (Navinci)
Kim Minsung (formerly known as Hansol) was revealed to be asexual during an Instagram live broadcast he ran in August 2017. He was previously a member of K-pop boy group Topp Dogg (now known as the name of XENO-T).
Minsung said on his Live:
“I thought about it and I’m asexual. I don’t love anyone. I only love me. I just love my friends and family.”
Since leaving Topp Dogg, Minsung has reportedly left the K-pop industry. He is currently working as a choreographer at the 1997 Dance Studio.
